Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu for Tall People

Think being tall makes BJJ harder? At Gracie Lake Norman, we teach tall and lanky grapplers how to use their long limbs to dominate the mats. Book your free trial today!

If you’re a taller or lankier person walking onto a BJJ mat for the first time, the experience can feel a little awkward. Long arms and legs can feel like they’re in the way, hard to fold up, and easy for training partners to grab and control. It’s a common feeling, and a common misconception that height works against you in Jiu-Jitsu.

At Gracie Lake Norman, we specialize in helping taller practitioners turn their height and long levers into a genuine advantage on the mats. Leverage is at the heart of everything we teach, and longer limbs, when used correctly, create some of the most difficult problems a training partner can face. Our coaching is built around helping you understand exactly how that works — and how to use it.

The Natural Advantages We Help You Unlock

Impenetrable Guard Retention

Long legs create distance, and distance is one of the hardest things for an opponent to close. We show you how to use your reach to keep opponents at range, making it genuinely frustrating for them to work their way through your guard and into a passing position.

Vast Frame Space

Long arms and shins create more room to work with defensively. Our coaches help you refine the use of that extra space, teaching you how to build frames that keep opponents further away and give you more time to react, reset, and counter.

The Power of the Lever

In basic physics, a longer lever requires less force to generate significant leverage. In our classes, you will learn to apply this principle directly to your grappling — using proper mechanics so that longer limbs generate serious control and finishing power without needing to rely on raw strength.

The Guards We Specialize in Teaching Tall Grapplers

The Closed Guard

Long legs are naturally well-suited to trapping and controlling an opponent’s posture. We teach you how to use that length to control distance and set up attacks directly from closed guard, rather than just using it defensively.

The Spider Guard & Lasso Guard

These guards rely heavily on reach and sleeve control. We coach you to use your long arms and legs to control an opponent’s sleeves at range, letting you dictate distance and timing throughout the exchange.

De La Riva Guard

Longer legs make it easier to wrap around an opponent’s leg with room to spare. We show you how to use that length to set up sweeps and back takes that shorter grapplers often have to work much harder to achieve.

Top Submissions We Co-Develop With You

The Triangle Choke

The triangle is often considered a tall grappler’s signature weapon. We teach you the precise angles needed to lock it in cleanly, even on wider opponents where a shorter set of legs might struggle to fully close the triangle.

The D’Arce and Anaconda Chokes

Long arms make wrapping the head and arm from front headlock positions significantly easier. Our coaches help you refine the grips and angles needed to finish these chokes efficiently, with minimal wasted movement.

Leverage-Based Kimuras and Omoplatas

Both of these submissions benefit from longer levers. In our classes, you will learn to apply proper mechanics so these techniques generate real finishing pressure, rather than relying on grip strength alone.

Overcoming the “Tall Person” Challenges

Height comes with real advantages, but it also comes with a few specific challenges. Our coaching directly addresses both.

Protecting Your Limbs

Longer limbs are easier for an opponent to grab, isolate, and attack. We teach you strict elbow-to-knee connection habits and proper defensive framing, so your long limbs stay protected rather than becoming easy targets.

Lowering Your Center of Gravity

Taller grapplers naturally have higher hips, which can make takedown defense more challenging. Our coaches help you refine your base and posture specifically to counteract this, giving you a much sturdier foundation against takedown attempts.

Personalized Coaching at Gracie Lake Norman

We don’t teach a one-size-fits-all version of Jiu-Jitsu. Every student’s frame is different, and our instructors actively work with you during drilling and sparring to adjust angles, grips, and positioning to fit your specific height and build. If a technique needs to be modified slightly to work better with your reach, our coaches will show you exactly what that looks like, in real time.

Ready to Build Your Game With Us?

Your height isn’t something to work around here — it’s a genuine asset waiting to be developed. If you’re ready to see how our coaches can help you build a game specifically tailored to your reach and frame, we’d love to train with you.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is BJJ good for tall, skinny people?

Yes, very much so. A long, lanky frame is actually one of the most respected — and often most feared — body types in Jiu-Jitsu once properly developed. Long limbs create serious distance-control problems for opponents when guided by good technique, which is exactly what our coaching focuses on.

Do tall people have an advantage in Jiu-Jitsu?

They can, but only once they learn to protect their limbs properly. Long arms and legs offer real leverage and reach advantages, but they can also be more exposed to submissions if left unprotected. Our program focuses specifically on teaching tall practitioners how to use their reach while keeping their limbs safe.

What if I’m tall and stiff or not very flexible?

That’s extremely common, especially for newer, taller students, and it’s nothing to worry about. Our fundamentals classes are built to safely and gradually improve mobility over time through proper technique and consistent, low-pressure drilling — you don’t need to start out flexible to succeed in our program.
