Learn how to wash your BJJ gi properly to prevent bacteria, bad smells, and “the funk” with expert hygiene tips from Gracie Lake Norman.
A clean BJJ gi is essential for hygiene, comfort, and respect on the mats. Because Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu involves close contact and heavy sweating, gis can quickly develop bacteria and unpleasant odors if not washed properly. At Gracie Lake Norman, we emphasize cleanliness and good training habits to keep our students healthy and the academy environment safe. Learning how to wash your BJJ gi the right way helps prevent “the funk” and extends the life of your uniform.
Sweat alone does not cause bad smells. The odor comes from bacteria that grow when sweat soaks into the fabric and is left untreated. Letting a gi sit damp in a gym bag creates the perfect environment for bacteria to multiply, leading to persistent smells that are hard to remove later.
One of the most important rules is to wash your gi as soon as possible after class. Even waiting a few hours allows bacteria to grow. If you cannot wash it immediately, hang it up to air-dry until it can be washed properly. Never leave your gi balled up in a bag.
At Gracie Lake Norman, we encourage students to make post-training hygiene part of their routine.
Washing your gi in cold or warm water helps remove sweat and bacteria without damaging the fabric. Hot water can cause shrinkage and weaken the fibers over time. Most quality gis are designed to be washed at lower temperatures while still getting clean.
A strong, odor-fighting detergent works best for BJJ gis. Avoid using too much detergent, as buildup can trap odors. Some students add a small amount of white vinegar to the wash to help kill bacteria naturally and neutralize smells.
Avoid fabric softeners, as they coat the fibers and trap odor-causing bacteria.
Turning your gi inside out before washing allows detergent and water to reach the areas that absorb the most sweat, such as the collar, armpits, and inner seams. This helps remove bacteria more effectively and keeps the gi fresher.
A damp gi is a breeding ground for bacteria. Always dry your gi completely after washing. Air-drying is ideal to prevent shrinkage, but if you use a dryer, keep it on low heat. Never store a damp gi in a bag or locker.
Many students forget to wash their belt, but it absorbs sweat just like the gi. Washing your belt helps prevent odor and bacteria from spreading back onto your clean gi. A clean belt is part of good mat hygiene.
Even if your gi is clean, a dirty gym bag can reintroduce bacteria. Regularly clean or disinfect your gym bag to prevent lingering odors. Using a breathable bag can also help reduce moisture buildup.
Keeping your gi clean is not just about personal comfort—it protects your training partners and helps maintain a healthy training environment. At Gracie Lake Norman, we value respect, cleanliness, and professionalism on and off the mats.
