What is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu?

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) is a martial art that focuses on ground-based fighting, leveraging techniques to control and submit an opponent, regardless of size. It is often referred to as the “gentle art” because it relies on technique and leverage over brute strength. BJJ was developed to allow smaller individuals to defend themselves against larger, stronger attackers. It includes chokes, joint locks, and submissions, all of which are effective in self-defense situations. At Gracie Lake Norman, we teach these skills in a safe and controlled environment, ensuring that every student progresses at their own pace. How Does BJJ Help with Stress Relief?

Training in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu provides an excellent way to relieve stress. The combination of physical activity, focus, and mindfulness helps clear the mind and reduce anxiety. The repetitive nature of drilling techniques is meditative, allowing your mind to focus solely on the task at hand and not on external stressors. Many of our students at Gracie Lake Norman find BJJ to be the perfect escape from daily stresses, both mentally and physically.
